Tybee Island is known for its loggerhead sea turtle habitat and education center. The habitat takes in turtles that have been injured by boat propellers, attacked by sharks, etc., and then releases them back into the ocean when they're ready.
I ran the Tybee Turtle Trot 5K this morning, which was sponsored by the center. The weather was absolutely beautiful! Considering I just recently started running again after a much-needed hiatus, combined with the fact that I felt sick the whole race, I am pretty happy about my time: 27:43. It will at least give me a good baseline to know where I was at the beginning of my training, as I train for the Savannah Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in November.
Feels good to get back into running. The honeysuckles and magnolias this time of year make it extra enjoyable!
You had to dodge these squishy creatures the entire race. There were at least 50 of them that had been washed up on shore.
What was so fun about the race is that afterwards they released 4 of the turtles into the ocean. I have always loved turtles, and these ones were especially cute how they would flap their fins around.
